Business Objects Skills - The Future for SAP BI Professionals

As an SAP BI professional, would you like to get into a niche segment and maximise your professional return? Looking at the current market and demand from our clients, it looks like combined knowledge of SAP and Business Objects is the way to go.
It’s been almost three years since SAP acquired Business Objects but we’ve seen a slow adaptation by both companies and SAP professionals of skills required to progress as a specialist in this highly competitive sector. Client driven demand has created a distinct divide between those who have embraced both SAP and Business Objects, and those that have rejected SAP and are clinging on to make the most of the Business Objects they have grown accustomed to.
There are many companies that have embraced a new way of doing things and therefore invested in the Business Objects Business Intelligence platform, but early adopters are facing a resource problem. The consultant base that actually knows both Business Objects and SAP is very small, so there just aren’t many people with the right skills available. We’re seeing an increasing demand for SAP BI consultants that know Business Objects at the moment and this is a very niche skill.
One of the things hampering the training of consultants is the attitude of companies that don’t want to pay for additional licenses and don’t see the added value. These companies are holding back the people who need to move on and learn new skills in order to stay competitive and to keep their employers and clients current.
Don’t just wait for clients to decide, take action
Currently, we’re hearing that many companies are undecided about what to do about SAP BI and Business Objects – whether the cost of a separate license is worthwhile for example or whether they should pay for more training. I’m concerned that companies are just waiting for things to happen and will only react to clients’ demands. They shouldn’t be waiting but making things happen and making intelligent choices about the technology.
As with any technology - being an early adopter can give you a competitive advantage, whether that means increasing your company’s productivity or increasing your own employability. But if you are waiting for signals from the markets before you decide which way to go, you probably are not going to get them. And if you do, then it will probably be too late.
Only a few forward thinking companies are a step ahead when it comes to bridging the gap and finding consultants that can offer both skillsets. Instead of trying in vain to find the right SAP and Business Objects consultants, they plan to make them. Some companies are now using the offer of training in SAP and Business Objects to attract candidates. It’s not a widespread approach – but it’s one that needs serious consideration.
Independent SAP contractors should think about investing their own time and money in learning and getting to know the platform - even if they aren’t actively working on a project. SAP will definitely create demand in the near future and consultants risk becoming obsolete if they aren’t ready for any change.
The future for SAP BI will include Business Objects at the front end. For anyone taking business intelligence seriously, whether you’re looking at product features to return on investment - it’s a good investment. So it’s time for you to invest – in the necessary skills to embrace the future.
